This program is taking over from another program called P-EBT, which ended in 2023. Now, it has new rules and an easier system for signing up. Most kids who can get these benefits will be signed up automatically, but some might need to apply, depending on where they live.
Who Can Get SUN Bucks?
Children might get SUN Bucks without needing to do anything if they:
- Already get benefits like SNAP, TANF, FDPIR, or Medicaid (in some cases).
- Go to a school that offers free or cheap meals through the National School Lunch or Breakfast Program.
- Are in foster care, Head Start, come from migrant or homeless families.
If you're not sure if your child will get SUN Bucks automatically, you can check online to see if they qualify.
If a family doesn't qualify automatically, they can still apply if they don't make too much money. The way to apply and the deadlines vary by state.
How to Apply for SUN Bucks
If you need to apply, here's how you can do it in a few states:
- California: Ask your child's school how to apply. Deadline: September 1.
- Illinois: Go to abe.illinois.gov and select the Summer EBT option. Deadline: August 31.
- New York: Apply through the provided link. Deadline: September 4.
- Arizona: Fill out an online questionnaire. Deadline: August 5.
- Michigan: Apply through the MI Bridges portal. Deadline: August 31.
Check the official program website or with your local social services agency for a full list of states, how to apply, and when you need to apply by.
After you apply and get approved, you'll be told your child's benefits, which will be sent between May and July, depending on your state.
You'll either get the money on an existing EBT card or a special Summer EBT card. You can use this card at any store that takes SNAP.
